10K

Ok. So it's been a week and I haven't posted about the 10k run. I don't have any pictures of it on here. Mom hasn't sent me any and no one else uploaded them to facebook. So anyway, I ran the 10k in 1:19:59. I am very proud of that time. I walked more than I walked too. There was this huge hill and I was like no way am I running up that. lol But I did run the last km, fully. My legs were uber shaky after the run. I had to sit down. Mom was like are you okay? I just couldn't walk anymore. But, it was a great fun. It was so cold!

I'm debating whether or not to run the Hypothermic Half here. I thought there was a 10k option, but there's only a half. I think it would be fun to run the waterfront in the middle of winter.

I went for a run yesterday. I want to work on my pace a bit. Unfortunately, I don't have a garmin so I don't know what my pace is exactly. According to the time of the 10k, I have about an 8 minute km. I'd like to get down to 7 and eventually 6. So I started back at the beginning of C25k. And I made sure I ran faster than normal during the intervals. I'm going to do to some strength training today and then run tomorrow. And then another day of strength training. And then a long run at my regular pace. :) I think that's what I'm going to do for a while...until I get sick of strength training anyway...lol

Another 5K post

Since everyone else posted, I will as well.  LOL.  I didn't get to run as much as I had wanted to prior to the race.  It rained a lot the last while (not just showers, but down pours), plus life gets in the way.  I am happy with my time.  I achieved my goal of getting in the 30s (39.17).  I'm not happy that I am so far down the time list, but it was my first race and I didn't get to train that much.  I might do another 5K before I jump to the 10K here.  I may do some in your neck of the woods.  I would like to be able to run the 5K with a decent time before moving to the 10K.  But that is just me and my weird train of thought.  LOL.

Since everyone else posted some pics, I will as well.

The 5K continued

I was just coming here and I noticed that K had posted a bit about the 5K. I am so proud with how everyone did. We did FABULOUS!!!

Not sure what I am happier with...beating my PR by 6 1/2 minutes or kicking my husband's ass. The look on Serenity and K's faces as I came into view near the finish was priceless, since the last time I saw you the husband was ahead by about 1 minute.

Looking forward to the 10K with K... My goal is going to be 1 hour 30 and my ultimate goal of 1 hour 20 minutes. Gonna try to do run at least 3 times a week (if not 4) and bike at least once a week.

The 5K

Well...no one posted about our 5k yet. I was pretty busy moving and with other stuff that I didn't have time to run as much before that. It was also really hot up here. But I still ran the 5k. And I ran it in my goal of the 30 time frame! 39.18! I'm happy with that! I didn't run the whole thing like I wanted, but I ran a lot of it. I'm so happy with what I did. :D I have the 10k in a few weeks. My goal is 1:15 and my ultimate goal is 1 hour! I don't think that's going to happen, but it's my ultimate goal!! We all did great on the run!! I'm proud of all of us!!

Benefits of Running

I wanted to share a non-running-victory that I discovered last night. Yesterday was the season opener of the Mooseheads. Our tickets are on the ice, so there are lots of stairs. We also park on a side street on the other side of Citadel Hill. Well, after the game (sadly the boys lost, but it was a good effort), we had to walk up that steep, long hill. When I got to the car, there was no heavy breathing. there was no asthma attack from my husband. Both of us were shocked. Last year, we found walking up that hill so challenging, and now it is a piece of cake.

Just thought I would share. Now if the team will just play better than they did last year (and if last nights game is any indication, we are gonna be in for a good season).

Getting better!

Overtime is done once again, so the training started once again.  LOL.  I decided to go for a run today on my road.  I figured I would shoot for 10 mins, walk for 5 then run for 8.  I really didn't think I would be able to do that because of all the hills and I was right, but only partly.  I did the 10 mins pretty easy.  I found it hard at the 8 mins mark, but since I knew last time, I found it hard after 3 mins, I knew I could continue for the other 2 mins to get to 10.  I probably could have ran another 1 or 2 mins, but didn't want to push it.  I wanted to make sure I got a second run interval in.  I then started my walk.  I did stop for a few seconds and did a quick little stretch of my legs, but after about 2 1/2 mins I was starting to feel refreshed, but I decided to walk for a total of 4 mins then start running again.  After 3 mins of running I was getting really tired.  I knew I couldn't run for my 8 mins like I wanted to.  The hills were really getting to me.  I ended up stopping after 5 mins.  I was really hoping to at least get to 6 mins, but I wasn't going to force myself and risk causing injury.  I felt good tho that I did run for what I did on my road.  10 mins on a flat track was almost enough to do me in.  I figure I ran for about 2 kms since I started my run shortly after I walked up that HUGE first hill and I turned around while running at my usual turn around point and didn't stop running until I hit my road again.  When we clocked it, it is about 2 1/2 kms from our driveway to my turn around spot, so I took off 1/2km for walking (even tho I ran back to my road from the turn around spot).  I figure by the time the Fiddler's get here, I should be able to do 10 mins intervals with a 1-2 mins walk inbetween.  My walk is fast as well, so I shouldn't fall too far behind.

Is anyone bringing their water bottles to the run, or are we hoping they have a lot of water tables set up?  I am thinking of trying to find a water bottle that I can strap to myself or something so I don't have to carry it and can easily reach it when I need it.

**sigh**

I haven't ran in a bit because I've been busy moving and setting up the new apartment. I had every intention of going for a run today, but it was just to freaking hot. I can't wait to get back running. If I can't run tomorrow, I might just do a workout in the apartment. I have enough room for it. Itching to get back to it!!

Starting again! LOL

I went running yesterday to the track, and I didn't get as much running in as I wanted, but I did run.  I walked for 5 mins (quite fast, LOL) then ran for 10 mins then walked for 5 (cool down).  I was hoping to do another run interval, but I just couldn't.  I knew I could have forced myself, but I don't want to cause any injuries, so I just let it be.  I went into it wanting to do 10, but told myself if I got too tired, out of breath, etc... then I would stop running after 6 or 8 (depending where I was time wise).  I was getting tired after 3 mins, but knew I had to continue.  LOL.  I wouldn't let myself stop after 3 mins.  I kept running, and started to feel less tired, and it became easy again.  The 9 min mark was hard, but since I was so close to my 10 min goal, I wasn't going to stop.  LOL.  I ended up getting a stitch early in my run (within the first 2 mins) but breathed through it and it went away, but I wasn't so lucky when I got the second stitch around the 8 min mark.  That one would not go away.  It got dull, but never actually went away.  I was hurting last night tho.  My legs felt like rubber until I went to bed, and my back and stomach were sore!  I took 2 advil before I went to bed and I'm fine today (well my back is a bit sore, but nothing major and I'm used to a sore back anyway).  Hopefully when I get running on Friday, I will be able to do another run interval.  I might go to 8 min intervals and see how I do with that instead of doing the 10 min interval and not being able to do anything else.  My goal is to do 10 min run intervals with a walk of 2-3 mins inbetween for the Fiddlers.  I would like to have 1 min walk intervals, but I do want to be somewhat realistic.  LOL.

Week 8

Done... I can officially run for 28 minutes non-stop. The first time was a fluke. The second time was an accident. But the third time, that is a pattern and makes it official :)

Today's run felt great. I just did the neighbourhood, but I made sure I did 5k. Although I am not sure about the time/distance/pacing, cuz the garmin was a bit wonky with the wind and the apartment buildings.

Gonna start Week 9 later this week!!!

Bridge to 10k

I know I haven't posted in awhile. Nothing really new. I'm still running though not as often. But I started the Bridge to 10k today. It was 4 intervals of 10 minute runs with 1 minute walks. It wasn't bad. I listened to Harry Potter on the run today. I don't know how I feel about that. I think I prefer music, but I will give it another chance because I like listening to the books. It just doesn't give the umph to keep running, but I did it and I kept running. The 10 minute intervals are easy. I didn't quite like the 1 minute walks. It was enough time to recover, but I was just like is that it? Only 1 minute to walk?? lol But it was good. I will continue with the B210k!

Week 7

So, I have been having a few bad runs lately. The main problem I have been having is that around the 5-7 minute mark, I REALLY have to go to the bathroom. However, when you are running at the trail, your options are very limited - the woods. Did some research last night, and found out that 20-50% of runners have the same issue - that the GI tract acts up when running. This topic was also included in my recent runners magazine.

Hubby and I wanted to go for a run tonight. We decided to go to Point Pleasant Park. My strategy was very simple go for a warm-up run around our apartment buildings. This may seem silly but I actually measured it today - starting at the front entrance of our building and going all away around both buildings and coming up across the stair path right next to the building, is 604 m. This distance could easily be extended if I went to the second driveway. So I walked around once and then ran once. This loosened everything up and I went back into the apartment, did my business, and then we went to the park. I also realized that there are several bathrooms at the park.

However there are HILLS!!! Man there are hills. I was able to do my 25 minutes. But I did have to pause the run for less than a minute while I walked up the 2nd big hill. I haven't done any work on hills, so it was pretty rough. But I survived - although halfway up the 3rd big hill I turned around and started my run back.

Week 7 is completed!!! Yay me... Now on to week 8... Oooo and tomorrow it will be one month until our big 5k. (and 7 and 1/2 weeks until the 10k).

Rough Week

Since my run last Thursday with K, I have had a hard time running. I attempted to go for a run on Saturday but my legs couldn't do it. I did at least go for a 6 k walk (plus a swim and some boating later in the afternoon). My legs were still pretty sore on Sunday. Monday and Tuesday were really hot. I attempted to go yesterday for a run up at the trail, but I just wasn't feeling it. My legs hurt, it was starting to get dark, and I just wasn't comfortable. I only ran about 7 minutes and then turned around and walked back. Even during the walk back, I could feel my heart racing. I also really had to go to the bathroom (i.e. pint of blueberries in the morning plus running don't mix). However one good thing did come from this - since I had to go to the washroom, I decided to go to the Tim's that I can see from the trail around the 2km mark. I never actually realized how far of a distance that actually is. And to think I actually go farther than that during my runs. So it made me feel really good about myself.

I chatted with K about some strategies to get be over this little hump. I am now on longer runs (25 minutes) and I really enjoyed the interval running. I was debating going back a week or even moving to the Bridge to 10k program. We decided that I would try the 25 minute run again and that I would reward myself with a non-food item if I completed it today. I am now the proud owner of a new pink hoodie from Walmart (it was on sale for $11) and the book "Chicken Soup for the Runners Soul". My plan for the book is to read it and flag the stories I am mostly inspired by, so that when I hit a block again, I can pull out the book for some motivation.

So I have proved to myself that I can still do the 25 minute run. I will be going again (hopefully Saturday morning) and I am going to increase the distance to about 7 km. Since the 10k is about 8 weeks away, I really want to work on increasing the distance, even if I am not running the whole thing. I want my body to be used to actually going the full distance. Doesn't matter how fast it actually takes me... Just matters that I am doing it....

Speaking of which I saw a great shirt from Nike: I will if you will (and then the Nike system). I liked it.

My Run Today

I wasn't going to run today because it looked horrible out, but it was raining so I said that I have to run. I haven't done a full run since Saturday so I was like I have to go out and do it. I was a little slower today because I haven't ran since Saturday, but I did it. I did the full 30 minutes. It was hard, but I did it. I only went to the end of the road and back this time because I have to take mom shopping for clothes to meet the Lieutenant Governor and I wasn't sure when she is getting home. Though I probably had time.
The arm band is a lot better for me because I'm not tempting to look at how much longer I have to go or to pause it. It's out of the way and it makes it complicated to look at it. I think after this week I'll start Bridge to 10k.

I'm trying to organize my room a bit for when I leave so that it's not a big mess when I take everything out. A lot of stuff is staying. I don't have room for it right now.

Exhausted

Okay so I finished week 9. I did my final run when I went away this weekend. Me and Rona went for a run and we got caught in the storm as you read already. lol! But the trail was nice before that. I liked running on it. The next day I went to visit the boyfriend for the weekend. I had a fantastic time! He was amazing in the play. He and the other cast members were so powerful. I ran out there on Saturday and did lots of walking along the beach looking for rocks. I tried to run today, but I just couldn't. I was so exhausted. My body wouldn't do it.

I am LOVING the iphone! It's a lot of fun running with music or books! I bought an armband so I don't have to hold it when I run. Today I put it in my cleavage. But that wasn't really working. lol. I'm going to do a few more weeks of 30 min runs before I switch to Bridge to 10k!

I enjoy running in the rain but....

I HATE THUNDERSTORMS!!!

Last night, K and I decided to go up to the trail for a late evening run - we got to the trail around 8:30. She wanted to go to the 3Km mark, which felt great during the run. As we were making our way back on the trail, it started to pour when we had about 2 km left. Didn't mind that too much... Until it started to thunder and lightening... (Not good for the phobia)... So we did some interval running back to the truck and we managed to do a 5.11 min / km. Sure we couldn't sustain it for very long but we were able to do it. Moral of the story, probably not gonna do a longer distance run so late at night on a trail that is not lighted during a thunderstorm.

However, it was the first time that I did a 25 minute consecutive run. It is scary to admit, that it wasn't that bad and I found it easier than the 20-minute run. The first 10-minutes were a bit tough, but once I was warmed up, I was fine and felt great. My pace was fairly consistent throughout the run. I only swallowed a few bugs. Both my legs and lungs felt fine.

On to week 7 of the program. I am thinking that it was a great idea to repeat the first two runs of week 5 and 6 before attempting the longer run. Although I am kinda sad that there is no more interval running until I start the Bridge to 10k program.

Going to be doing my own thing

I know I already mentioned it, but I figured I better post it as well.  I decided to do my own thing because I am just not enjoying the program.  I figure that not every single person that runs follows the program and they just do their own thing, so that is what I am doing.  I am setting myself some realistic goals so I won't injure myself.  I know I could skip a week or so on the program, but I am still not enjoying the actual program and I figure if I'm not enjoying the music, etc... then it won't keep me motivated to run.  I decided for my run on Saturday, I would listen to Harry Potter.  This way I can get lost in the story while running so I would lose track of time.  LOL.  It worked great for me.

On Saturday I decided to go to the track for my run.  I so love running on the track better, and will run more on the track I think.  Yes I need to be able to do hills, but if I keep running on my road, I won't be able to do the longer runs because of the major hills.  The little hills will be fine, but not the bigger hills.

When I was driving to the track, I decided to try to run for 10 mins at a time, but once I got there, I got to thinking that was unrealistic right now, and I lowered it to 5 mins, then when I actually got to the 5 mins mark I was still feeling good so I decided to do 6 mins.  My legs could have kept going, but my lungs couldn't.  LOL  I was happy with the 6 mins, since my goal was 5.  I only walked for 4 mins then started running again.  I was going to walk for 6, but decided since I felt great, I would run again after 4 mins.  The second 6 mins one was hard.  After 4 mins, I was having to push myself to finish the 6 mins.  Since that was my goal, I really wanted to stick to it.  I do like that they have outhouses at the track, but I just couldn't bring myself to use them even tho I had to pee once I got there (and yes I went right before I left the house, LOL).  I only walked about 4-5 after the second interval then went home.  I felt great by the time I got home, but I was in a rush to finish packing and getting ready to go to the campground that I decided to just leave it at that for now.

Ceilidh and I went for a run today on our road.  She did pretty good, and with a little more excersize she will be great!  We only ran a total of about 3 mins, 2 of those mins was up the big hill (the one that winds me just walking), then we walked for a few mins and started jogging again.  She got a stitch in her side that just wouldn't go away after a mins, so we walked for a bit more then turned around and came home.  She is proud of herself for running what she did.  I think the next time I go to the track, I will find something special for Zach to do while Ceilidh and I go to the track.  This way I can get a little ahead of her and not have to worry about cars or anything.  Once I get too far ahead of her, I can turn around and meet her again.

Run 6.2 - Part Deux

I thought I would go for a nice morning run since I have the day off. I decided to go up to the trail since if I just do the neighbourhood, I really only do the amount on the program. But when I am up at the trail, I usually go to either 4 or 5 km. Today I decided to go 5K, since the last time I did 5K, was on this run cycle.

The run felt great. I was especially surprised with how good I felt on the last part of the second 10 minute interval. Pacing was good, and I shaved 3 minutes off my pace from the last time. So I felt really good about this accomplishment.

Song of the day: Girlfriend by Avril Lavigne. The beat was great and kept me energized throughout that part of the run.

Week....

9!!!! WOO!!

I did my first run of week 9 today. My pace is pretty decent. It took me to the store and then back to the middle of the two driveways for the church. I need to work on the pace a little bit, but I'm hoping for a 7 minute km. It wasn't bad. I had to stop twice. The first time because someone asked for directions (that happens everyday!) and then my shoe was untied. But I didn't have to stop because of anything I did. Though towards the end, my legs felt like a cross between sore and like jelly. But it was great being able to do it!

I thought I was going to have a hard time because I didn't run yesterday. I did run on Friday, but sometimes I find it's a little bit hard for me to run after taking a day off. This one wasn't bad. When I take 2 or more days off, it's a little tougher for me...That's why when I'm away this weekend...I'm still going to run!

I was talking with Rona and she said after she finishes the program, she's going to go back to week 1 once a week to work on the pace. I might try that. I can't wait to get up and start running the trail.

I'm itching for the 5k run though. I can't wait to run it. I'm going to do this I think for 2 weeks or so and then I'm going to start the Bridge to 10k. I definitely want to work on pace though. It's okay now, but it can be better!

K

I love late evening runs.... but I HATE BUGS!!!!

Since it was hot yesterday, I waited until 8:30 last night to go for a run. Ray came with me for safety. There were sooooo many swarms of bugs around that it made it very difficult to enjoy coolness of the evening.

The goal for this run was to be consistent in the pacing during the run intervals. I figure that being consistent now, will help as I progress to longer distances... (Remember the good old days, when the goal was just surviving the run)...

I kept a good pace throughout the run. Although I developed a huge stitch in my side as soon as I finished the last run interval and I couldn't breathe it out no matter how hard I tried. THEN, I swallowed a whole bunch of flies that I was gagging and almost had an asthma attacked, cuz I still couldn't breathe deeply because of the stitch. I managed to stretch out the stitch and then we hoped in the truck and went to Quiznos for supper (yummy beef and mushroom sub)...

Run 6.1

After the 20 minute run, running 5, 8, and 5 with 3 minute walks in between was a piece of cake. I really pushed myself to keep a good pace going for most of the runs - probably explains why I got a stitch in my side halfway through the 8 minute run and had to pause the run to do some deep breathing to get rid of it. But I was able to resume the run with no issues. I went further than I normally do and did 4.6 km and it took me about 45 minutes. Even with the pause to get rid of the stitch, at this pace I should be able to beat my baseline 5K by a few minutes. Although my goal is to be under 40 minutes. I will be so pleased for my time to be 39:59 (but I am shooting for 35 minutes).

When I am running, I always put my running list on shuffle. This way I don't get bored with the songs or even the order. I have over 132 songs on the playlist, so I don't usually get that many repeats through the week. (Although, did I really need 3 Nickelback songs during today's 45 minute workout). There were two songs that helped me get through the rest of the run today: 1) Good Bye Earl by The Dixie Chicks (I can't help it, that song makes be giggle, especially cuz of the video). 2) Beautiful by Christina Aguilera (It was playing during my cooldown and just made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside). Just thought I would share some songs, cuz eventually both of you will not need the podcast and need something to listen to.

Week 3 contiued!

I ran on the trail with Rona on Saturday.  OMG, I love it!  It is so much easier to run on a flat surface then run on my road!  I didn't get tired until the last minute of the last 3 minute interval, but even then it wasn't that bad.  I recovered rather quickly and was breathing quite normally within a very short time frame (during the first song I listened to).  I will still run on my road since not every race will be flat, but I think I will do a few runs at the track here just for something different (and easier).  I'm usually winded here on my 5 minute brisk walk since it is up a huge freaking hill, let a lone running up all the other hills.  LOL.  Not sure if I could ever run 20 mins on this road with all the hills (especially the really big ones), but I will give it my best when I get on that level.

Week 8!!!

Today I started week 8. I ran for 28 minutes!! WOOO!!! It was easy! Almost 5k! Ran to the end of the rod and almost all the way back which is almost 5k :D Can't wait for the 5k run!! :D

On another note, I got into the canoe today!! :D And going back tomorrow, I think!

Almost Dead

So, I did my 20 minute run today. I think I died on the track. But the main thing is that I did it. I can walk 20 minutes at a time....Who cares if it is the pace of a turtle.... I still did it....I am pleasantly surprised that I was able to do it....

Week 5

So I have been kinda repeating week 5 and the first two runs have been going well. Today I attempted the 20 minute run. It did not got very well. It was way too hot, plus everyone had there green bin out. They smelled RANCID... I was ready to throw-up.

Oh well.... I will try again tomorrow.

Argh...

Hating the heat. It's really messing up my runs. I can't run for 25 minutes in the heat. I get nauseous because of the heat. So I tend to run half of it and walk for a minute or so, then run again. I couldn't do it today though. It was just too hot. Yesterday was brutal for me. I just walked yesterday, but I couldn't cool my body down the entire day. I didn't want to go through that again. I might start running on the beach. Which will be difficult, but give me some resistance. But I really just hope it'll give me a breeze! lol

Week 3!

I started week 3 today.  I didn't find it too bad.  The 90 sec run was no problem.  I found I got tired about about 2 1/2 mins of running the 3 minute interval, but I powered through it!  The second one was the hardest.  I really had to use my mind to keep going, but I did it.  I went first thing this morning since the kids were having a sleep over.  I was exhausted when i got up.  I didn't fall asleep until around 2 give or take, then woke up around 6ish, then the alarm went off at 8.  I learned that I need to eat before I run.  I'm now feeling nauseous a bit.  I know that it is from a combination of the heat (with humidex it already feels like 25 degrees) and no food, but I need to pick the kids up by 11:00, so I wanted to make sure I had my run in.  Turned out I had time to do both, but oh well.

Not sure how my pace is now.  I ran further then my turn-around point for the second 90 run interval then I turned around before the big turn (there were a lot of dump trucks going by and I didn't want to meet one on the turn), but when that run interval was over, I happened to finish at my original turnaround point.  My last 3 minute run started right before I hit my road again, so I ended up doing my "cool down" walk for most of my road.  I know I turned around with only 1 interval left, but I didn't feel like I ran very far even tho my pace seemed to be on par with before, but my distance wasn't there.

Dripping with sweat

I did my run today. 25 mins. I had to stop twice because the heat was getting to me. I felt like I was going to be sick and I know it was the heat, so I paused it and walked for a few minutes to see if it would subside when I cooled down. Then I continued. The heat is killing me. I might start running by the ocean so I can have the breeze. Lol! Other than that, the runs are going well.

How's everyone else doing?

Run 5.2

I can run two 8-minute intervals. HOLY CRAP!!! Hard to believe that only two months ago, I could barely run 1-minute.

My DM

My DM was down today. She's runner. I told her that we were training. She's shooting for the full marathon when we run our 10k. She said it was like having a part time job on top of her full time job because she had to run 5 or 6 days a week, but that she loves it. It's so addicting. And you should see her body. She looks fantastic. Even though tomorrow is strength training day, I'm going for a run with Dani. She needs to start training for the police academy. I'm shooting for 25 mins, but knowing her, not going to go over well. Lol. Anyway, I'm still going to do my strength training and maybe a short walk or swim if it's nice.

So Run for the Cure is Oct 3. I want to do it up there, you up for it Rona? We're going to have a team because one of the girls I work with is battle breast cancer. I think it would be a great tribute for her to do it. D you can do it here too. I'm going to see if mom will do it. It's a great cause!

I think part of my problem with not wanting to run is due to my sneakers. I will admit that I am very lazy when it comes to taking them on and off and I don't untie them. This has resulted in the material at the heels completely wearing away. I wore these sneakers yesterday and ended up getting a huge blister on my heel. I have bought some gel heel protectors as a short term solution.

I went over to SportsCheck today to buy new sneakers. I tried on another pair of New Balance. They were on sale, so I was hoping for some success. OMG!!!! I could feel the difference and my foot was not supported in all of the places that it needs to be. I showed the sales guy my current sneakers and he went to find me this years model of them. He couldn't find them, but he was able to find the exact same ones I showed him. I am so happy and I am gonna break them in slowly.

I will only be using these new sneakers for running and I will be taking them off properly in order to prolong their lifespan.

Run 5.1

I didn't get a run in while I was in New Brunswick for the weekend....We wanted to, but the humidity was UNBEARABLE, even at 9 am. So we spent the whole time at the beach instead...When I woke up this morning, I was not excited about running today...So I had to make sure that I actually went up to the trail after work.... Really don't want to lose the progress that I have made.....

Anyways, today was my first run of Week 5. Three five minute runs. The first 5 minute run was fantastic and the other two runs were a bit tougher, but not too bad at all. I kept a good pace the entire time. Total distance was just over 4 km.

I love how friendly people are on the trail. I had just finished by third run interval and was breathing pretty heavy. This man runs past me, encouraging me that I am almost done. My legs were pretty sore afterwards, since I haven't run in five days. I am looking forward to the 8 minute runs. I think it will be tough but I think I can do it. After that run, I will decide if I will try the 20 minute run or repeat run 5.1 and 5.2 before attempting it.

Week 6

I did the last run today of week 6, which is 25 minutes. Week 7 three runs of 25 minutes so I'll be moving on to week 7 probably Thursday. I find the longer runs I feel like I can't continue part way through. But after I get through that little bit, I feel like I can keep going and going. The last few minutes I have to push myself. Because I'm adding some strength training, I figure I will switch to 3 to 4 runs a week and in between days do strength training. On the days I do strength training, I will also walk for probably an hour. The strength training I'm doing is Carmen Electra's 2nd DVD. One day I'll do lower and mid, then upper and mid, then full body. I'm also going to switch it up with the Biggest Loser Yoga DVD.

I'm back!!

I ran today since it was much much cooler! Still pretty hot, but much more tolerable then running in 30 C plus weather! I shouldn't complain since I don't like cold, but can't run in the heat.

Anyway, I did good. I was a little slower then I have been before (not as slow as my last one tho, LOL). I almost made it the "turn around" driveway. I walked there anyway, then turned around. I only had a hard time for the last 2 secs on my 5th interval, and about the last 15 secs or so of the 6th interval. I found if I did "belly breathing" (an anxiety relaxation technique that we are learning with C), I did much better! Sure it was hard to concentrate on so many things at once (form, running, breathing, etc....) but I did it. The belly breathing worked really good during my walk intervals to get me ready for the next run. I'm going to try to run tomorrow since we are both off the weekend, so he can get up early with the kids, but then again, he has to do his other job, plus yardwork (the yardwork won't make much difference tho), but I am going to give it a shot anyway. I'm only gone for 30ish minutes, so I'm sure I can find the time tomorrow. It looks like my running schedule is going to be Saturday, Sunday, Monday tho. LOL. Not sure how that is going to work out, but right now it is the best I can do for sure. If the weather isn't too hot, then I can run more during the week.

Anyway, I did it (week 2 still), and I found it quite easy. I might try tomorrow to do week 3, but I'm not sure since I again had almost a week off. LOL.

Wooo!

Okay...I'm here. So I started week 6. First run isn't bad. 2nd run not bad. The 25 minute run... I ran for about 13 mins before I had to walk for a couple of minutes. But that's also because I was running in about 30 degrees of heat. I haven't ran in a couple of days because of the heat and because of work. But I ran today. I did run 2 of week 6. I'm going to add some strength training to my routine. Work on my flabbiness. Lol! Hope everyone else is beating the heat!

Week 4 - Part Deux

No one seems to be blogging much this week. Hope training is okay well for everyone this week.

I have been redoing week 4. So far I have done two runs and I will (hopefully) be doing two more - one tonight (weather permitting, as it is freaking HOT!!!) and on Saturday while I am in New Brunswick with the girls. The five minute runs are getting easier. On Tuesday, I actually did a total of 4 km. I never realized how close the 2km mark was from my usual turn around point on the trail.

Next Tuesday, I will start week 5. I am kinda looking forward to the 8 minute runs. I am thinking they won't be too bad. We'll see how the 20 minute run goes at the end of the week.

On another note, my scale has gone down about 2 pounds since I started the running. At first, it is slightly disappointing that it is only 2 pounds. But I have probably lost about a half a dress size. My body shape is really changing and I have been feeling sooooo much better.

Week 4 - Part One

Today, I finished the last run of Week 4. No major problems. I did develop a stitch in my side, but I was able to breathe it out. I don't think I am ready to progress to the 5th week, so I am gonna continue on week 4. Since I knew I would be repeating week 4, I spent this run focusing on my pacing. I made sure that for each run interval, I did not go slower than 9:00 a km, which is better than the last run. I was exhausted after this run today, but extremely pleased. Still loving the GARMIN!!!!

Week 5 Again...

Did a second 20 min run today. It was easier than the first 20 minute run. I start week 6 on Saturday. I have to get up early because I have to work until 10 and the bf's birthday party right after. And Sunday...I'll probably be hungover, so I might just walk. Lol!

Week 6 is another 3 runs. First run is 5 min run, 3 min walk, 8 min run, 3 min walk, 5 min run. Second run is 10 min run, 3 min walk, 10 min run. Third run 25 min.

Easy peasy!!

Week 2, run 2

I did my second run yesterday of week 2. It wasn't too bad really. I had to have a much much slower pace then normal since I was feeling like crap with a horrible horrible cold. I didn't even get off of my road before I finished my 3rd run. I didn't think it was that hard until the end and I was doing my cool down walk and had horrible waves of nausea. I really didn't think I was making it home without being sick, but I did! I actually prefer the slower pace since I didn't have to push myself as much, but I don't know if I can actually stand running that slow when I am not sick. LOL.

run 4.2

Haven't really had time to post much this week. On Tuesday I did my second run of week 4. It didn't go to bad. I also got to try out my new toy - Garmin Forerunner 305. I was gonna wait to buy it, but I remembered that the taxes will be going up so might as well save a few dollars.

It took me a bit to find it at Costco and I ended up having to go over to Dartmouth to get it. They were promoting the new Garmin Forerunner 405, but there was no way I could justify $350. The Forerunner 305 was only $170 and it does everything that I want and need it to do.

The key features that I want it for is to tell me how far I have gone and what my pace is. I can also use it to monitor my heartbeat, but I haven't played with that feature yet. It will be more useful for longer runs, but also really got during the Fiddlers Run, as people have a tendency to try to keep up with the pack during a run, but I probably can't keep that pace up. It also tells me how many calories I have burned. And I can set to for interval running, but I really like listening to my music and using the application. It will also measure the elevation of the course, but the trail is pretty flat, so I am not too worried about that feature yet. I am not sure what other features the Forerunner 405 has, but this one is just perfect for me....well I wish it was a bit smaller, as it is bigger than a man's watch

During this run, I learned that I am much quicker during the first interval of my run than I am during the last (go figure!!!). I decided that I am gonna repeat week 4. I don't think I am ready for an 8-minute run, let alone a 20 minute run. This way I can also work at my pacing.

Gonna go for run 4.3 tomorrow after work. I think I am gonna follow K's lead and when I do week 5, I am gona try to do 5 runs that week. Probably will do 5.1; 5.2; 5.1; 5.2 and then 5.3 (aka the dreaded 20 minute run).

Week 5 Continued

Did my second 8 minute interval run yesterday. I went to the Boardwalk with a friend of mine and we did the run. Went fine. No complaints.

Today though...was my 20 minute run. OMG!!! I did it. I did it, but it was hard. Omg was it hard! It nearly killed me literally. haha!! Nah, it was tough, but I did it. I really had to talk myself through though. After halfway through, it got really tough. But I concentrated on my breathing and slowed down the pace a bit so I could keep going. After a few minutes, it got easier. Then after a bit, it got hard again, but I continued and made it. It was tough, but I can run for 20 minutes straight!! I will do it again tomorrow morning!

I did hurt my ankle a little bit. Not while running, but gave it a little twist when I was stretching. Seems all right now. I think I just pulled it the wrong way. But doesn't hurt right now. I just had to rest it for a little bit.

But if it bothers me tomorrow, I won't run. But it should be fine.

Anyway, just wait till you guys reach week 5! Feels so good to accomplish it, but it was tough.

Week 5, Run 2

Yesterday, before work, I ran my second 1st run of week five. Went fine. No complaints. Today, I ran the 2nd run of week 5. 8 minute run, 5 minute walk, 8 minute run. I was surprised of how easy I found it. Especially the first 8 minute run. I know I don't run fast, but it wasn't bad at all. I found it easier than the three 5 minute runs. It was great running for that long though. I never really thought I'd make it this far. The last few minutes of the 2nd 8 minute run was a little difficult, but managable. I had a stitch, but again I just concentrated on my breathing. I find I get a stitch when I don't breathe properly. So I just need to take a few deep breaths and I'm usually good to go. I'm excited for the 5k! I wish I could do it now!! lol When is the fiddle run by the way?? Tomorrow another 8 minute run! A friend might be coming with me after work. She wants to get back in shape and we're going to have a girl's night. Running, dinner, and movies.

Anyway, it was a good run!

Week 2 again

I started week 2 again since I have sneakers now. The sneakers helped so much! My knees did not hurt at all while running or even during the walks. My shins hurt a little during the first run, but nothing major (actually considerably less then they hurt during week 1, which was very little). I had to really push myself to finish interval 5 and 6, but it only happened near the end. I think when I was really pushing myself in interval 5, I only had about 10 secs left (not that I knew) and it was a bit longer in interval 6, but for those 2 intervals I was running up hills for part of it. I must take my camera out one day (not for a run) and take pictures to see if it shows all the hills that I have to run up. I never seem to have to run down them. LOL. Those always seem to fall on my walk intervals, but I don't notice the downhill walks as much as I notice the uphill runs. LOL.

Even tho this is my 3rd run for week 2, I had almost a week off in between run 2 and 3, so I will be doing week 2 all over again.

Bedford 5K

I was a little worried last night, cuz they were calling for rain. Fortunately, the rain held off and the temperature was mild. It was beautiful weather for the run. They had a nice turn out, probably around 300 participants. The event started by the kids 1K dash, which was awesome and inspiring. It definitely got me even more ready to do the run.

The course was pretty flat, so that was pretty good. There were a few small hills in the first half but nothing too major. I decided for this run, I would start week 4 - 3 minute run; 1:30 walk; 5 minute run; 3 minute walk. I didn't mind the three minute runs and the first five minute run was okay. But I was pretty much crawling for the last five minute run, but I pushed through it. Then I walked the rest of the 5 k (probably about 2 k). I was gonna try doing a few more minutes of running but I didn't want to push it, so I just walked the rest of the time, but I made sure it was a good pace.

Everyone else that I was there with (Nadine, Ang, Charles, Mike, Ray) were all finished and they cheered me on for the rest. Nadine and Ang even ran the last few meters with me at the end, which made it special. My finish time was around 49:49 minutes, which was slightly slower than my goal of 40-45 minutes (but I am a slow walker - gonna need to work on that). Not too bad for a first race.

My bib and medal

Close up of the medal

We all then went to brunch - and I learned that fried bologna is a must after a 5 k run :-)

My goal for the fiddler 5k in September is a finish time between 30-35 minutes, so I will have to work a bit more on speed. I would also like to run the 10 k in the Valley on 10-10-10 (that would be really cool, but it is Thanksgiving weekend, so I am not sure what the plan will be.

First Day Week 5

So I finished the first run of week 5. This week has 3 runs. The first week is three 5 minute runs and 3 minute walks. Second run is two 8 minute runs and 5 minute walk. Third run is 20 minutes without any walks.

I was a little nervous about starting this week. 20 minutes without any walks seems like a lot to me. But, I went out there and started it. The first 5 minute run was a bit hard. I had a stitch in my side, but I breathed it out and didn't have to stop running. The rest was pretty good. The only thing that disappoints me is I don't have as much time to listen to an HP chapter and soon I won't get to listen to one at all. I'm thinking of adding a walk after my run so I can listen to HP, lol. Plus it would give me an hour workout rather than 30 to 40 minutes. I still might try running on the highway. The might be fun, but I don't know if I like the gravel on the side...Maybe I'll try it.

After today's run, I think I can handle the 8 minute and 20 minute runs. I felt like I could've kept going. Getting this daily exercise really helps with my energy. I have way more energy when I work out.

Since I run everyday or pretty much everyday, I decided I'm going to do 2 runs of each. Tomorrow I will do the first run again. Monday and Tuesday is 2nd run. Wednesday and Thursday 3rd run. And Friday is in case I miss a run for any particular reason. And if not, I'll probably do the 20 minute run again or maybe 8 minute. We'll see what happens.

Good luck on your first 5k tomorrow Rona! Can't wait to hear how it goes!

Last Run Week 4!

Did my last run today for week 4. Week 5 starts tomorrow (hopefully...I'm working till at least 2, maybe 6). I took yesterday off. My body was sore. I think it was cause of work. I don't have good work shoes. It's so hard to find a pair of stylish shoes with support. Plus, I don't want heels. They tend to hurt my feet. Before work tomorrow, I get weighed in. Hopefully I'll see a loss!

Run 3.3

Completed!!! Week 3 DONE!!!

It wasn't too bad. Pretty much the same as Tuesday, with the second 3-minute run being a little bit harder (especially with only 30 seconds left), but I was able to push through it.

I will be going to Bedford tomorrow to sign up for the race on Sunday. After today's run, I think I am gonna try to do 2 minute intervals for the 5K. Week 4 will start on Tuesday.

4.4

No big shocker cause I run pretty much everyday, lol. I start week 5 on Saturday. I'm a little nervous because the last run is 20 minutes straight...AHHHH!! I might switch to the highway soon just so I can walk longer...or start going the other way...or do both. Dunno...we'll see! But the runs are getting easier. I need less recovery time. I started counting telephone polls. I estimate it takes 2-3 polls per minute. So I go by that sometimes when I need an extra push. I can't wait to be able to run 5k. Sometimes when I'm running I feel like I can go longer. So week 5 starts on Saturday.

Is this going to help tone my flabby legs? lol

Run 3.2

Today was really hot and I decided to go up to the trail, hoping that there would be a breeze. There was a bit of a breeze, but there was quite a bit of shaded areas so that helped. I was worried about overheating (I really HATE the heat). Surprisingly the run was fine. I struggled a bit during the last part of the second 3-minute interval, but there was no major difficulties. I can't believe how friendly others on the trail are. Today there were a bunch of bikers and runners along the trail and almost all of them gave a little wave or nod, which kind of encouraged me to continue.

Looking forward to seeing how the final run of week 3 goes on Thursday. I will see how the 5K goes on Sunday before I decide if I should repeat week 3 or move to week 4 (not quite sure if I am ready for a 5 minute run). Then again, I will probably move to week 4 and if need be increase my recovery time between runs. I am glad I clued into that early in the process - make sure I do the full run interval. It is much better to play with the walk interval, so that my body will get used to the running.

Week 2.2

Wow! This walk/run nearly killed me! I decided to try my old crappy uncomfortable running sneakers instead of my tennis shoes. OMG! I don't know if that was the problem or not, but my shins were killing me for all of intervals 1 and 2. They got better for interval 3 and 4, but my legs were getting tired for interval 5 and 6. I will go back to my tennis shoes next run and see if it is any better. If not, I will probably repeat week 2. I can do it, but it's hard, so I would rather repeat it one more time before I go to the next week and do damage by pushing myself too hard.

K - You need to come over here one day to do a run and see how much fun it is running/walking up all these freaking hills! I'm nearly winded after my first 5 min brisk walk since it is up a steep hill!

4.3

Run was fine today. Got a little distracted playing with a cat. I think it's one of the neighbors barn cats. Cute little thing. The back of my thigh started hurting a little, but I pushed through it and made sure to stretch it when I got home. My legs don't really hurt after. The runs are getting easier. I was fine for half of the first 5 minute one and then I was just like omg kill me. The second one I think I was fine for most of it...probably because I know it's my last one. Lol.

First Official Run

Another friend sent me an email today inviting me to participate in the Bedford 5K run/walk on Sunday - in support of Lung Cancer. I think I am gonna try it, since it is a combo run/walk. I know that I will not be able to run the full thing - my runs are currently about 3.75 k, with several walking intervals. I am not sure how I will progress on Week 3, only have day 1 completed. I am thinking of doing either 90 second or 120 sec intervals. But it should be fun and hopefully will keep me motivated for the Fiddlers Run.

I survived!

I did my first run of week 2 today. I guess I'm changing my running days to probably Sunday, Tuesday, Thursday. I didn't mind it much until I got to interval 5. My legs started getting tired then, but I pushed through it. I really had to force myself to continue for interval 6. I decided to count to 90 while I ran because I figured it would help knowing roughly how much longer I had. Didn't work too well. I found that made it feel longer since I knew how much more I had to count. LOL. I'm sure it will just keep getting easier. I stopped on the way back (I was already passt my 5 min cool down walk anyway) to pick some lupins for Ceilidh. She wanted me to go the other way so I could get her flowers, but I figured I would find some going my regular way, and I did only 3 driveways away. I have to re-judge myself to see how far I am running. Since I started the new week with different amounts of running, I can not use my old turning points. This time I ran just past my regular turning driveway (until I finished run 3), then ran straight past my road and went to the first driveway in the other direction (until I almost finished interval 4). I turned before I finished the 4th interval (still running tho), since some steep hills and sharp turns were coming up and I didn't want to be running around the turns and hills and have cars not see me. I ended up having to run up a hill tho since I was still running when I turned around. I need to get a monitor that will tell me distance (I'm assuming those exsist). I am really curious to see how far I am going and if I am really improving as I go.

Run 3.1

You will notice that there is no "a" after the title....I did it....I survived two three minute runs...

I decided to hit the trail today and it is very peaceful. The first three minute run I didn't mind, but the second - I was watching the seconds count down on the app. I was much slower on the second three-minute run interval than I was the rest of the time. I did find the first 90 second run was great. I felt really good.

Last week, I chatted with a runner friend about my legs (left calf hurting and right shin hurting), so it appears that while I am running I tend to favour one leg. So today, I focused on putting equal pressure on each leg. Even while running, I am thinking like an occupational therapist. It definitely worked, my legs were felt pretty good.

I must say I am really enjoying running this time. On my run days, I look forward to work ending so I can go for my run. Maybe it is because I just want to stop working, cuz I do have those feelings on non run days. But I can see how running is addictive. It doesn't matter how far or fast I go. I have a full 30 minutes to myself to unwind from a stressful day at work and I get out some frustrations my hitting the pavement.

Week 4

Yesterday I started week 4 and did another run today. The first one I did was hard. I thought I was going to die! Lol! Today wasn't as bad. It got better. The 3 minute runs are easy now, but the 5 minute...ooo I almost stopped a few times, but my body can keep going. It's just a mental thing thinking I can't do it. But I did it!

The podcast I use slows down the first 5 minute run so that we can make it through the other runs. The 2nd 5 minute run doesn't have the best music at first. It combines two songs at the beginning and the first time I heard it I jumped, lol.

How is everyone else doing?

Thursday, June 17, 2010

Run 2.3

I survived...but just barely. Well, that is not completely true. I definitely ran slower today. But that is fine, I still finished the run. My legs are still sore. It is so funny, during run intervals 1-4 by legs are almost begging me to stop running, but during walk interval 4 my legs are begging me to start running again. It just seems REALLY weird to me, but I checked with a runner friend of mine and this is normal. I also found a friend that wanted to come with me, a black and white cat started to follow me.

So I am gonna start week 3 on Saturday. Any bets to how long it is gonna take me to complete week 3. I think I will start on BLT trail, although I will have to go early...DH wants to go to the Seafood festival.

Taking this week off

I will be taking this week off from running. It seems the stomach flu claimed victim number 2 (Chris), so there will be no running today as planned. I will hopefully try to go out at least once or twice anyway to run, but I am not planning on officially doing week 2 until next week when all viruses are out of this house! I don't want to be tired and possibly sore while having to take care of sick people or being sick myself. Not my idea of fun (not that it is fun anyway). I will of course post if/when I get to run this week, as well as reading all other entries!

Exhausted!

I was exhausted today because I watched my sweet niece and nephew and didn't sleep the best, but I don't sleep great anyway. I still went for my run. It was a little tough the 2nd last interval like always, but getting easier. Week 4 next week!

On a side note: I'm thinking of my Halloween costume. I know, it's early, but I want to make it. I want to make a Queen of Hearts costume from the new Alice in Wonderland or the Sweeney Todd Mrs. Lovett costume. Shouldn't be too hard. I figure a Renaissance gown with the right material might be good. Mrs. Lovett is raggedy with a corset. Either or shouldn't be too hard. What do you think??

Run 2.2

Done. No major issues. I did the neighbourhood, since I will be going out to dinner with my lovely sister who is visiting. I think I am running faster, especially for the first few intervals. My legs are sore. I am really hoping there is a hottub at the hotel where my sister is staying, cuz I think it would do me a world of good.

Bought a new sports bra, apparently DH thought I needed some more support when I run. Very comfortable. I also bought a new pair of exercise pants. I am loving the stuff at Walmart; very reasonable prices. I am hoping they will get some decent stuff for winter running, which I am kinda looking forward to (I know I am strange).

Anyways, gotta go get ready for dinner.

Windy Windy Windy

Still ran today. Even though it was windy and a bit rainy. People out here are so nice. Asked me if I wanted a ride because it was raining. Declined of course. But he realized I was out there on purpose. The weather cleared up as I went and just got windy and rainy again when I was at my driveway. I ran yesterday too. Before work, it was a nice day. Anyway, I think next week I'll be ready for week 4.

OT - Iron Man 2

Just got back from seeing Iron Man 2. It was AWESOME, almost as good as the first. Robert Downey Jr. ROCKS and I thought Mickey Rourke was FABULOUS. The special effects were great as usual. I did find it was a bit slower than the first; however still highly recommended. Looking forward to Toy Story being released on Friday.

Run 2.1b

Okay, I went for a run this morning. I found a great trail that I think you will LOVE K when you move up here. It is the BLT trail and it is surrounded by trees and a lake and every km is marked. It was a very nice run.

The run went fine. I was able to do the entire thing without any stops or breaks, so I will move on to run 2.2. Since I had to have a potty break on Friday, I am not counting it as a completed run.

I am not sure if I am running any faster. I do find at the end of the run I am going slower. I usually run different paths around the neighbourhood, so it is hard to know how far I am running (especially since I had a bit of a break the last time). I am finding that my recovery time is decreasing. When I did run 2.1a, I found that I was only just ready to do the run interval after the 2 minute walk, but today I was almost waiting for the beep to tell me to run. I am finding that my legs are still sore (really hope that goes away soon).

Final run of Week 1

I did my final run today of week 1. I am not having any problems with week 1, so I will be going right into week 2 I believe. just trying to figure out when to start. I am finding I am getting further with my runs. I found today I was 2 1/2 mins faster then I was on my first run. My second run, was a little faster then my 1st, but not by that much (maybe 20 secs), but today I was a lot faster. I am not overly sore at all. My shins are getting sore, but it is only while running really. Everytime my foot hits the ground for my first run interval, my shins were screaming in pain, but it stopped after the first interval and was more of a constant uncomfortable feeling, but not pain. I'm assuming that will just keep getting better tho. New sneakers are out of the question for a bit. We need new tires for the truck desperately! I will have to suffer for a bit longer.

After I got back from my run, I took the kids over to the neighbors to see baby robins, so it was a nice finish to my run!

June 13.

I ran this morning. It's another beautiful day here. I'm still doing week 3, but I found this one a little tougher than usual. Probably because I'm still feeling the effects of my drunken night. I wasn't even active at all yesterday. I did nothing but sleep. But...I got up this morning had a bite to eat and went for a run. I found I was a little slow. And I wanted to quit and pause, but I didn't. Mostly because I don't want to come on here and say I couldn't do it. You guys keep me going.

I have a question. Do you guys find you're getting faster? The past few days, other than today of course, I found I was walking and running faster. Not uber fast or anything. But I'm getting farther and farther in my runs. Anyway, just wondering if you guys are finding that.

Rona did you buy the new HG cookbook? The cocktail book comes out June 22. I'm totally getting it. I want to try the turkey slowcooker recipe in it. Vegetarian version of course.

2nd Run - Week 1

I did my second run this morning. I was supposed to do it yesterday, but I was too busy yesterday morning, and it got too hot yesterday evening (plus I had to help install the new washer/dryer). Now if I have time I need to stay on schedule and do it tomorrow, which will mean I won't have the day off in between. The run went fine. My shins stopped hurting after the 2nd run interval, so hopefully that will get better each time, if not I will have to bite the bullet and try to get good sneakers sooner rather then later. I added a little music to my MP3 player, and I only got to listen to 2 songs for my cool down. I may have to go a little further to make sure I cool down for the full 5 mins. I did the exact same distance this time as I did last time, but I started the program a lot earlier since I knew how to work it this time. I might just start it once I hit the road instead of on my driveway instead. I like have a turning point on my walk, and right now I turn at the first driveway on Beechmont Rd.

Yesterday

So I went for my run after work yesterday. It was good. Beautiful day, but the heat is killing. Going to continue with week 3 this week though.

I think I'm going to take the day off from running today...seeing as I'm a bit hungover. lol.

I went to my WW meeting. I lost 2.6 lbs this week. I took the "magic journal" so I was forced to track. And that really helped me. So I'm going to continue to track. I'm only 3 lbs away from goal again! :D YAY!!

Week 2.1

So this afternoon, was the beginning of week 2. I should also point out that it was extremely warm this afternoon and I am not a fan of the heat.

Anyways, I began with a walk home from work. Darling hubbie came and got my backpack. I was doing FANTASTIC. I don't find it too bad going from 60 sec to 90 sec and I REALLY like the 2 minute recovery walk. However, after run interval 5, I really had to go to the washroom (I hate the heat). I quickly paused by app and ran into the house. Then I went back outside to resume my run.

During the last run interval, I received a text. I didn't look at it and just kept running. A few moments later, I was beginning to think that the 90 sec was never going to end. But I kept going. Finally I heard the application say "one minute left". That's weird, I thought. He usually says that on the final walk. I remember doing the math that it is six 90 sec walks and six 2 minute walks. (Even though I would be running more than week 1, I was excited about less intervals). Anyways, I decided to check the i-phone, and lo and behold, because of the text, I missed him telling me to walk. So my last run was actually 2 minutes 30 sec.

So moral of the story - Hopefully week 3 won't be too bad for me!!!

Non-running victory

Okay, I just went on the Wii Fit and in 12 days I have lost 1.8 pounds....Yay me...And not too bad with all of the birthday cake I have had this week....(BTW - the pumpkin chocolate chip cake was AWESOME)....Will post later about my first run of week 2....

Beautiful Day!

I took yesterday off. I did my 3rd run today for week 3. I'm definitely going to do week 3 again. I think I need at least one more week with it. The first 3 minute run is a little tough for me. The 2nd 3 minute run isn't as bad; I can do it, but the first one I really have to push myself. So I think one more week will be just what I need.

Graduation from Week 1

Today I walked to work in the morning and even brought my running clothes with me so that I could run home. However, I decided that it would be really tough and awkward to run with the backpack, so I decided just to walk home for a bit of an extra warm-up. My darling hubbie brought down my running pouch (and a bottle of water - he is so sweet) and brought the backpack upstairs.

Anyways, today was my third consecutive run that I did without any breaks or pauses. I have officially graduated from Week 1. Week 2 will begin on Friday.

Finally Started!

Well I finally completed my first run for week one. It was fine. My only complaint is about the volume on my MP3 player. LOL. I had to figure out how to change the volume when I got home, which is something I should have done before I went on my run. I had a splitting headache after only 3 intervals because it was max volume. I just kept switching ears then at the end, just took them out since I could still hear it perfectly.

My road isn't exactly the best road to start training on, but then again maybe it is. I will be so used to hills/inclines that nothing will faze me now. Luckily tho, none of my runs happened on the hills, but shortly after I walked up them, so that was a bit tough, but not as tough if I had to run up the hills. I will need to get better sneakers tho eventually. My little ones just don't cut it, and my shins were hurting after a few intervals, which I am only assuming is because there just is not enough cushioning in my sneakers. I do have to learn to pace myself tho. I was going faster then I should have I think, but I still did it.

Second Run of Week 3

Did the second run of week 3. Wasn't really any easier. I think I'm going to do it for another week. Just to make it a little easier. My legs hurt a bit, even though I stretched. Maybe I should stretch more. Doesn't hurt too bad though. The week 3 run doesn't take me as far as the other ones did, so I get to listen to more Harry Potter!!

Week 3

So I did my first run of Week 3 today and it nearly killed me! But I did it! And I'm going to do it again tomorrow. Week 3 has two 3 minute runs and they landed on hills. Woot! Anyway, my mind was telling me to stop, you can't do this. But I knew better. My body wasn't giving up and neither was I. I have to get past the mental block of I can't do this...because I can do anything I set my mind to!

Congrats Rona on making it through your second run without pausing!! Way to go!!! You are doing awesome!

And Ms Serenity I am waiting for some posts! Lol!

Run Today

I was EXHAUSTED today!!! The drive home was so long yesterday since it was pouring rain the whole way. Then we visited with family for 3 and 1/2 hours (not that I am complaining because I don't spend all that much time with them). Then we still had another hour drive home. We didn't get home until 11:45. I passed out pretty quickly but I was awoken at 5 in the morning with the loudest thunder I have heard in a long time and I had a hard time getting back to sleep. I was so tired when the alarm went off, I texted a co-worker to tell him that I was going back to bed and would be late. I was an hour late for work. The whole work day was so long, and the rainy weather outside wasn't helping.

Anyways, after work the weather turned nice, so I decided to go for a Run 7 of 3 for Week 1 of the program. Again at interval 4, my legs were getting sore, but I pushed through it and I was able to complete by second consecutive run of the Week 1 program without any breaks or pauses. YAY me!!!!!! My legs were pretty sore afterwards, but after a few stretches they were as good as new.

On Wednesday (weather permitting - although I will run if it is cold and a light rain, but not if it is downpouring), I will attempt to do the third consecutive full run. If I can, I will be moving on to week two. Fingers crossed, cuz I really want to move to the next level.

Kick me!

Make me get off my butt! I don't feel like running. But I have too. I do the entire Podcast, which takes me to the end of my road and a little back. So I listen to books on the walk back. Right now, I'm listening to the Harry Potter books. Yes I know I'm a geek. Updating my mp3 player now.

Anyway, Rona you coming home on Friday?? You should come to the WW meeting with me on Saturday morning. If I don't have to work. And it looks like I won't have to work. And we can go for a run after. I might try the highway. But I walk the rest of the way back. I run the podcast and then walk for 30 mins afterward usually. Dawn got a mp3 player.

Edit: went on my run! Saw a deer. It was pretty cool!

2nd Run of Week 2

I did my second run for Week 2 today. It went fine and pretty easy as usually. I need to stretch after my run as well Rona. My legs were killing me at work today. Speaking of which the power went out in the morning and didn't come back on until right before I had to leave for work so I had to go to work without a shower. I wasn't happy.

I need to get my eating back on track. I've been doing pretty well with that, but today and yesterday overate a bit. :S Gotta get it back on track.

I'm going to try to go for another run tomorrow and if it's not raining hard, I might go hiking. :)

Today's run

I was really disappointed that I couldn't go running yesterday. But it was pouring. I went out at lunch to walk over to the mall and it was cold with a little mist in the air, but around 3ish the skies just opened up.... Oh well....

So, I went today. I completed the whole thing. But I did learn a few valuable lessons today:

1) I am really glad that I made a new playlist of music where I played with the order of the music....As much as I love certain songs, only certain songs can be played at the intervals that I want to quit in order to keep me going.

2) I think my body is learning that if I am sore, I will walk the interval. As per usual, my legs were getting progressively sore, so that when I finished run interval 4, my legs were very sore. This time I figured instead of walking interval 5, I paused the app and walked until my legs were better. Then I resumed with run interval 5. The goal of week 1 is to run 8-one minute intervals and I should not cheat myself. So now hopefully my body will learn that you may need to walk, but the entire workout will take longer.

3) I NEED TO STRETCH. I think that is what is causing a lot of my problems with my legs. I really need to stretch. Being an occupational therapist, I really should know better. So, before I leave to do my run on Saturday I will stretch.

Hopefully Saturday's run will be a lot better with the lessons I have learned today.

Great Website

A friend of mine told me about a great website - mapmyrun.com . I am not sure how good it will be for the country. I use it here in Hali and I can plot my entire run. I can zoom in enough to see my apartment and then I click the path I have followed. It is even useful to use when there are no streets. I have even used it to include the times that I run around the Superstore building. You can even log in and save records of your progress.

Rona - Week 1 Part Deux

Last week, I started the Couch 2 5K program and I did my runs on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. On the Monday, I was able to handle the 8 one-minute run intervals. On Wednesday, I was able to do all of the run intervals, but on interval 4, 5, and 6 I wanted to rip my leg off and beat myself with it. Friday was even worse, I had to walk run intervals 4 and 5 before I could resume running the last 3. I thought this was supposed to get easier. I also got slightly discouraged because I weighed myself before I started the running program and then I weighed myself on Sunday and I gained about 1.8 pounds. Then I tried on a pair of capri pants that are rather snug on me and they are feeling loser. Since muscle weighs more than fat, it appears I have lost "inches" but not pounds yet.

Since Week 1 was so tough, I decided to repeat it, which I started yesterday. I was able to run the 1st to 4th interval but I had to walk for the 5th. I made a deal with myself that I had to run the 6th but I could walk the 7th if I needed. Proudly I was able to run the last three intervals. For whatever reason, I usually can do the last two run intervals with minimal problem (I think it is because I am almost done)...

Today, it is a such a beautiful day here in Hali, a bit windy but pretty warm. I decided to go for a 3.67 km walk. It took me about 45 minutes but it was quite nice. I finally got to listen to a Lost podcast with Jorge Garcia answering questions about the finale that I have been trying to listen to for several days.

I am trying to plan my runs this week so it would be too much of an issue that I am going home for the weekend. I wanted to run on Tuesday and Thursday, but it looks like they are calling for rain on Tuesday. Not that it should deter me, and I may still do the run if it is not a down pour. Light rain I can handle. If it is too nasty tomorrow, I will run Wednesday and Saturday. Maybe one of you can come with on Saturday.

Today

I did my last Week 1 run today. I could've started week 2 earlier, but I didn't. I think I'm going to go somewhere else to run rather than only running my road. I got up early to run this morning, but I didn't sleep well and it was raining. So I went back to sleep and got up for work. I ran when I got home. I didn't want to, but I made myself do it! I'm off until Thursday so I will be starting Week 2!

K's info

So, I am the youngest of the 3 of us. I'm a teacher (when I get days) and I work in retail. I've been a runner for a few years now. I do interval running. Walk then run walk then run. I like that better. But, I'm going to train for a marathon. Not the Disney one like my sister. I will start with either the Fiddle Run and/or Run for the Cure.

I lost about 80 lbs in total. After I lost some weight, I started running and jogging. I love walking and running. I do Couch to 5k. And going to start week 2 this week.

So here we are to motivate each other and ourselves with this blog. I have to stick with the running otherwise everyone will be disappointed. And my sisters will beat their baby sister!! :D

RonaLee's Intro

I have tried to start learning to run a few times, but everytime I find an "excuse" to stop. A friend of mine recently ran a marathon and he mentioned several of the other places that you do a marathon. One being the best place in the world - DISNEY!!!

I love Disney and recently had my dream vacation at WDW. I am counting the moments until we go back. I googled the participation medals for the Disney Marathons and I am in LOVE... So it looks like I have my motivation. My ultimate goal is to run a Disney marathon in 2012. I am hoping to run the Disney Princess Half Marathon in 2011. However, I know I have to be realistic. I just can't go from being fairly inactive to running a marathon. My short terms goals are to run a 5K by September and a 10K by October.

So I am beginning the Couch to 5 K program. The last time I tried the program, part of the reason I gave up was I hated looking at my watch every few moments to see if it was time to alternate between walking and running. I have downloaded a great app on my iphone that lets me play my music in a playlist and will tell be when to switch between running and walking. It is so much easier.

So last week I started the program. It went OKAY... My legs were really sore and on the third day I was unable to run the 4th or 5th run intervals, but I was able to do the last three. Part of my problem was that I was running on hills, which I was not ready for. I think I will repeat Week 1 of the Couch to 5 K program.
